YouTube for PS4 lets you take advantage of your Sony VR headset.
If you have ever accessed YouTube from a web browser or an app, then you probably know what to expect from the YouTube for PS4 app in general. It gives you access to a library of video content that you can peruse or search, and there are advanced search tools to find exactly what you want.
You do not have to create a YouTube account and sign in to use it on PS4 or elsewhere, but there are some advantages to doing so. Signing in will provide you access to 18+ content, which is a category that a significant amount of media on YouTube falls into and not nearly as naughty as it sounds.
Additionally, an account will let your favorite videos, view your watch history and tag videos to watch later. It also lets you subscribe to content creators and receive notifications when they release content. You YouTube feed will be more personalized to you, and using an account will let you have a more seamless experience across PS4 and other devices, such as your PC, Xbox, media boxes and so forth.
With the rise of virtual reality gear, such as the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive, YouTube has gotten in on the action by supporting VR-focused content from creators. This includes 3D content as well as 360-degree content, which allows you to change your perspective by moving your head.
It is important to note that you can use the PlayStation VR headset to watch all videos on YouTube. Doing so still provides the benefit of that cinema-like experience. The 360-degree content is pretty neat, though, and when used well, really enhances the YouTube experience.
Be mindful that this is a PS4 app, which means that you will require a Sony PlayStation 4 video game console. In addition, the YouTube PS4 VR component is specific to the PlayStation VR headset. This headset is not included with the console and requires a separate and not insignificant purchase.
